England Women’s head coach Phil Neville claims Lucy Bronze’s transition to midfield a part of a two-year strategy for its Lionesses.
Neville’s decision to deploy the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year from place in the 3-3 draw against Belgium Women of England was questioned after the Lionesses failed to impress in Thursday’s friendly.
But the England Women head trainer is insistent that decision was part of a plan, with the Bronze herself buying in to the idea.
“The matter is that she is [satisfied] and wants to perform with there,” Neville said.
“She has bought into the plan of this tiny time of giving a platform to find some consistency at the position.
“It’s an entirely different mindset but I think that if we’re taking a look at a two-year plan we have to be brave in certain conditions and certain positions that we’re trying to strengthen and become much better in.
“When you have not got Jill Scott, Fran Kirby or even Jordan Nobb, then we must find players of the quality, experience and physical ability that will require us to another level.
“Lucy will return to right back. There is this fixation with me enjoying with her at midfield. Pep Guardiola did it using Phillipp Lahm, played him at right-back when he was one of the World Cups of the best players on earth in one.
“The next season I proceeded to watch Bayern Munich vs Borussia Monchengladbach and he was at central midfield – he was the best player on the pitch.
“You have got to have a vision for somebody and you know what? Lucy has the identical vision as me. She is liked by the team in there. There will be instances when she is at times she will probably soon be in right-back and in there.
“Ultimately. We are attempting to make the team better. We are attempting to have Lucy to influence the group more than she has right-back.”
“I liked the match we played USA and I played midfield afterward,” Bronze said.
“It was a struggle playing against the best team on earth in a position I have not played since I was 16, I absolutely enjoyed it.
“I played against Canada as well but I didn’t enjoy it so much. I had been tired and it is hard to perform with my position at a top rated game let alone a different place.
“I had been in midfield another day and I truly enjoyed it. It’s funny because I am playing in midfield now with just two of the women from the group and I am kind of getting bossed about by them. They’re telling me that I am doing stuff wrong.
“It’s enjoyable for me personally, I enjoy being pushed. I am comfortable at full-back and uneasy at midfield but I am playing with a grin. I am learning new things. Perhaps it will help me if I got back to full-back, it’s a struggle.”
